Chennai: The election commission of india has announced that the final electoral roll, which was originally scheduled to be released the day after tomorrow, will now be published on the 23rd of this month.
Supreme court Orders Prompt RevisionThe decision follows orders issued by the supreme court of india on 29 january 2026 in Writ Petition (Civil) Nos. 1072/2025 and 1145/2025. Acting upon the directions of the court, the election commission of india issued letter No. 23/SIR/2026/ERS dated 30 january 2026 outlining the next steps in the revision process.
Identification of “Logical Discrepancies”In its communication, the Commission referred to a category termed “Logical Discrepancies.” This classification includes entries in the electoral database where inconsistencies were detected during scrutiny. Such discrepancies may arise due to duplication of names, incorrect demographic details, mismatched identification information, or other data irregularities identified during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process.
List to Be Shared with local AuthoritiesThe Commission has directed that the list of individuals falling under the “Logical Discrepancies” category be shared with the respective village and local administrative authorities. This step is intended to facilitate field-level verification and ensure that eligible voters are not wrongly excluded, while ineligible or duplicate entries are removed.
Ensuring Accuracy and TransparencyThe election commission emphadata-sized that the revision exercise is being carried out to maintain the integrity, accuracy, and transparency of the electoral rolls.
