Rajya Sabha Elections: Why priyanka Chaturvedi Was Not Nominated

Political Dynamics Prevent shiv sena (UBT) Nomination

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut explained why priyanka Chaturvedi was not nominated for the upcoming rajya sabha elections from Maharashtra. He cited the entry of senior leader sharad pawar as a key reason, saying that the party’s political calculations and numbers were not favorable to fielding her again.

Numbers and Calculations Influenced the Decision

Raut stated that shiv sena (UBT) wanted priyanka Chaturvedi to return to the rajya sabha, but the party did not have the required strength in the assembly to secure her victory. He emphadata-sized that if Pawar had not contested the election and the political math had been favorable, Chaturvedi would definitely have been given a second chance.

Maharashtra is set to fill seven rajya sabha seats next month.

MVA Supports Pawar’s Candidacy

On march 8, congress extended its support to ncp chief sharad pawar as the opposition alliance candidate for the rajya sabha seat from Maharashtra. This settled speculation about the maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) candidate, as all three MVA parties — congress, ncp, and shiv sena (UBT) — had been in consideration for the seat. This data-alignment further reduced Chaturvedi’s chances of being nominated.

BJP Candidates and the assembly Math

The ruling bjp has fielded four candidates, including Vinod Tawde and Ramdas Athawale. Raut noted that Tawde’s nomination is likely recognition for his organizational work over the past six to seven years.

With over 230 MLAs in the 288-member assembly, the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance can likely secure six out of seven seats, while the opposition MVA has enough numbers to field only one candidate.

Upcoming rajya sabha Elections Timeline

Current rajya sabha members from maharashtra whose six-year terms expire in april include sharad pawar, Ramdas Athawale, Fauzia Khan (NCP-SP), Rajni Patil (Congress), priyanka Chaturvedi (Shiv Sena-UBT), and dhananjay Patil and Bhagwat Karad (both BJP). Voting for the seven vacant seats will take place on march 16, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with counting scheduled at 5 p.m. the same day. Raut’s explanation clarifies that political strategy and alliance dynamics dictated Chaturvedi’s omission from the party’s rajya sabha ticket.
