No Refund If Cancelled Within 8 Hours — Check New Charges

Indian Railways has updated its ticket cancellation and refund policy with effect from early april 2026 in a bid to curb last‑minute cancellations, discourage misuse by agents and improve seat availability for genuine passengers.

📌 Key Changes in Cancellation & Refund Rules

⏱️ No Refund Within 8 Hours of Departure

If you cancel a confirmed railway ticket less than 8 hours before the scheduled departure of the train, you will not receive any refund — full fare will be forfeited. This extends the previous “no refund” period (which was about 4 hours before departure or after chart preparation) to a wider 8‑hour window.

💰 Refund Deduction Slabs Under New Rules

Here’s how refund amounts are now calculated on cancellations made before the 8‑hour no‑refund window:

Time Before Departure

Refund Rules After Cancellation

More than 72 hours before

Maximum refund (with standard cancellation charges)

72 to 24 hours before

25% deduction from ticket fare

24 to 8 hours before

50% deduction from ticket fare

Less than 8 hours before

No refund at all

📆 When the New Rules Started

· indian Railways phased in the new refund and cancellation guidelines from April1toApril15,2026.

· Most major changes, including the 8‑hour no‑refund rule, are now in effect and apply to confirmed tickets.

⚠️ What This Means for Passengers

For higher refunds, cancel your ticket as early as possible — ideally more than 72 hours before departure.
Last‑minute cancellations (within 8 hours) now get zero refund, so sudden plan changes can be costly.
📉 The revised rules try to discourage speculative cancellations and manage seat availability better, but could affect travellers with unexpected changes or delays.

📝 Additional Notes

· These changes also affect RAC and wait‑listed tickets and have adjusted penalty brackets for these categories too.

· Standard rules for Tatkal tickets (which generally don’t offer refunds except in exceptional conditions) remain separate.

· In some delayed‑train scenarios, you may file a TDR (Ticket Deposit Receipt) for refunds under certain conditions; irctc guidelines explain this process.

🧠 Quick Tip

Always check the expected departure time and cancellation window printed on your ticket or in the irctc app. Cancel early if plans change — waiting too close to departure will likely result in no refund under the new rules.
