1. Bharat Mata ki Jai


Coined by: Kiran Chandra Bandyopadhyay in the play Bharat Mata
First use: The play was first performed in 1873; the slogan later became popular during the freedom struggle


2. Vande Mataram

Coined by: Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay in his 1882 novel Anandamath
First use: Rabindranath Tagore at 1896 session of Indian National Congress; now India’s national song; a perennial favourite with nationalists


3. Jai Jawan Jai Kisan


Coined by: Lal Bahadur Shastri
First use: In 1965 at a public gathering in Delhi; in 1988 Atal Bihari Vajpayee added “Jai Vigyan” to the slogan


4. Jai Hind

Coined by: Major Abid Hasan Safrani of the Indian National Army
Popularised by: Subhas Chandra Bose who made it into an official form


5. Satyamev Jayate

Coined: from the Mundaka Upanishad
Popularised by: Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya in 1918
