Slum Demolitions Double in 2023.?
The report, titled 'Forced Evictions in India: 2022 & 2023,' highlights a disturbing trend wherein slum evictions have increased by 103 percent, while demolitions for infrastructure projects have surged by 188 percent in the last year alone. Many of these evictions are supported by court orders, further exacerbating the plight of affected individuals and families. Shockingly, the report reveals that only 28 percent of those evicted have been rehabilitated, leaving thousands displaced and vulnerable.
Delhi has witnessed the highest number of eviction incidents, with approximately 2.8 lakh people forcefully evicted by state authorities between 2022 and 2023. Moreover, marginalized groups, including religious minorities, Scheduled Tribes, Scheduled Castes, and Other Backward Classes, account for a significant portion of those evicted.
The reasons behind the demolition of slums primarily include court orders and redevelopment projects. Notified slum dwellers may receive compensation for rehabilitation under redevelopment projects, whereas those in unnotified settlements are not entitled to any compensation, making them more vulnerable to eviction.
The Dharavi Redevelopment Project in Mumbai, aimed at transforming Asia's largest slum area into high-rise buildings and other developments, has been mired in controversy and delays for years. Despite promises of relocation and housing for affected families, the project has data-faced numerous setbacks, including legal challenges and political opposition.
