Carlos Alcaraz Leads Team europe to 2024 Laver Cup victory Over Team World

In a thrilling finale, Carlos Alcaraz guided Team europe to a 13-11 triumph over Team World in the 2024 Laver Cup. The four-time Grand Slam champion defeated Taylor Fritz 6-2, 7-5, securing the decisive points that sparked celebrations with his teammates and captain Björn Borg in Berlin.
Alcaraz's victory marked his second singles win of the weekend, contributing eight points overall for Team Europe. Heading into the final day, Team World had a strong lead at 8-4, but europe mounted a comeback starting with Alcaraz and Casper Ruud’s doubles win against Ben Shelton and Frances Tiafoe, finishing 6-2, 7-6 (6).
Although Shelton defeated Daniil Medvedev 6-7 (6), 7-5, 10-7, giving Team World hope, Tiafoe’s loss to Alexander Zverev 6-7 (5), 7-5, 10-5 set up the crucial showdown between Alcaraz and Fritz.
The Laver Cup operates similarly to golf’s Ryder Cup, with the first team to reach 13 points declared the winner. Each of Sunday’s matches held a value of three points.
Alcaraz, who had been the lone victor for europe on Saturday, demonstrated his poise under pressure once more. "We did it for you," he exclaimed while embracing Borg, surrounded by jubilant teammates.
Reflecting on the experience, Alcaraz noted, "It’s great to achieve our goal of winning the Laver Cup. Watching the matches from the sidelines is nerve-wracking."
Borg expressed pride in his team, highlighting the competitive nature of facing Team World. "We almost lost, but Sascha [Zverev] played exceptionally well, giving us the chance to win," Alcaraz concluded, celebrating their hard-fought success.
