Actor Nicolas Cage has hinted that he might reprise his role as the renowned superhero Superman in the future. While famous director Tim Burton is no longer completely associated with the superhero genre, this was not always the case in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Burton is most known for the 1989 Batman and Batman Returns films, both of which starred Michael Keaton as The Dark Knight. While Returns has a devoted following, it was panned at the time of its premiere for being too gloomy and featuring too many adult themes. Unfortunately, the world was denied the opportunity to watch a third Burton-directed Batman film as a result of this.
What some people may not realise is that this isn't Burton's only unmade superhero feature. Burton was working on a film called Superman Lives for a while, in which Cage would have played the eponymous hero. Despite the fact that Superman Lives never made it through the pre-production stage, photographs of Cage in the famous Superman suit have surdata-faced. This, of course, has provided just enough fodder for fans to speculate on how the picture may have turned out and lament what might have been. Cage has played the Man of Steel once before, in the animated film Teen Titans Go! to the Movies, but he has never appeared in a live-action version of the character.
