Human Shit and Save the World!?
Everyone in the world defecates but no one talks openly about it except small children or their parents. Did you know that human feces is the solution to the world's biggest problems?
On average a man urinates 730 litres a year; Discharges 91 kg of faeces. But have we forgotten the benefits of this?
The one who helped to defecate was in a high position
In ancient Roman times, no human waste was wasted. The faeces were used as compost in home gardens. Used to make urine and cloth.Do you know what was the highest office in the country during the reign of king Henry VII of England?
The highest office was that of the king's assistants. It was a good idea at the time to clean his buttocks after defecating to get the king's attention.Human faeces were sold to local farmers overnight. Urine was collected and used to soften leather goods.
Energy today
We can learn a lot from the toilet approach of our ancestors. Making energy from waste is not as permanent as solar power or a wind farm. The body can defecate without any difficulty if it takes in the required fibre.Wastewater is treated and methane is produced from the remaining sludge. Modern cleaning machines add bacteria to the sieve, thereby forming a biocase. It can be used as fuel for homes or vehicles. It is cleaner energy than petrol and diesel.
Although there are many benefits to human faeces, urine is the number one priority. 72% of the world's water is used for agriculture.
Excessive relocation also takes place due to lack of water in some countries. In the UK a man urinates 2 litres per day. Not only that but it costs 140 litres of water.
Will recycling water protect us from disasters?Of course. The technology for this is already in use. Nearly 90 per cent of the water used in israel is recycled and used for agriculture. This is the data-size of 56 thousand Olympic swimming pools.
When we talk about agriculture, we talk about phosphorus. But phosphorus is declining due to excessive mining activities. It is difficult to reproduce this natural resource. In countries like the USA, china and india the next generation may go without phosphorus distribution.
It is difficult to farm without this nutrient. Without phosphorus in the diet that is produced today, only half will be produced.
What is the solution?
We can follow our ancestors and bury sewage back into the soil. Dry toilets that compost faeces are a great solution. In the current environment, 4.2 billion people live without safe toilets. So redesigning the toilets will make it possible for them to have toilets too.
Similarly, by innovating a toilet that can be used without water, the deaths of 800 children who die every day can be prevented.
Microsoft co-founder bill gates predicts that this type of new bathroom will not only be life-saving but also profitable.
By 2030 the toilet will become a market worth six billion US dollars. There will be a profit of five dollars for every dollar spent on this. You may laugh or frown when told to defecate but human faeces can help save this planet if we think and act immediately.
