Bird Flu Outbreak: Chickens to be slaughtered..!?
About 100 chickens died suddenly at a poultry farm in thane district, Maharashtra. Bird flu has killed chickens in Vehloli village in Shahapur Tehsil. Samples of dead chickens were sent to a lab in Pune. Chickens have died due to H5N1 avian influenza in the district, said thane ZP CEO Dr. Bahusaheb Dangde revealed. Authorities have taken steps to curb the spread of the virus. He was ordered to kill the chickens on the farm where the virus had spread. The collector also ordered the slaughter of about 25,000 chickens within a kilometer radius of the affected poultry farm. Authorities have also alerted the thane data-border districts.
The scientific name for bird flu is avian influenza. The disease mostly infects ducks and wild waterfowl. Scientists say the virus can be transmitted to wild birds by feathers, or to chickens by feathers or feces. Every year in india, bird flu causes a great deal of unrest in one area or another. But poultry farmers need not worry, scientists say.
