A wide bench of the karnataka high court has rejected a petition filed by students against the ban on hijab in educational institutions.
The court also ruled that the hijab ban imposed on PU college would continue.The petition had been pending for 11 days. The petitioners wanted the hijab to be allowed as part of the ritual.But the court ruled that it could not prove that it was an unavoidable religious practice.
The court ruled that it was unconstitutional to allow uniforms in institutions and that the government had the power to issue orders in this regard.
The petitioners said that they would approach the supreme court after receiving the full text of the high court order.At the end of last December, students wearing hijab were first barred from entering the Udupi Govt Girls' Pre-Primary College.
Following this, pro-Sangh Parivar students came out and demanded that the hijab be banned in other colleges as well.
This created tension in the campuses of the state.Six students of Udupi Govt Girls Pre-Primary college have approached the high court questioning the ban on hijab.
The high court, after hearing detailed arguments for days, adjourned to pronounce the verdict.The karnataka government has ruled in court that the hijab is not a part of religion.
The karnataka government has stated that the hijab will not be allowed in educational institutions. An interim order of the high court wide bench had ruled that religious symbols could not be allowed in the existing schools and pre-primary colleges.
Hundreds of students wearing hijabs were reportedly stranded on campus. These students could not even write the exam.Police Commissioner Kamal pant had earlier said that a ban had been imposed in Bangalore in the wake of the verdict.
The ban is effective from today until the 21st. An absolute ban on jubilation, protests, and rallies. All educational institutions in the Dakshina kannada district will be closed today.
The ban also applies to celebrations in public places. Special security has been put in place for all schools and colleges in the state.
The district administration today declared a day off for all educational institutions in the Dakshina kannada district, including Anganwadis.
