Due to ill health, Vijayalakshmi (71), an elderly female elephant, died yesterday at the kozhikode Elephant Camp in the Ulandi Wildlife Sanctuary in Pollachi. Some of the elephants in the kozhikode camp are utilised for kumkis, while others are used for riding. Vijayalakshmi, a retired female elephant who is one of 27 elephants cared for at the sanctuary, has been in terrible health for the past seven days. Treatment was provided by forest veterinarians. vijayalakshmi died in this situation without receiving any care for the elephant. In the presence of Assistant Forest Ranger Vijayan, Forest Veterinary Officer A. sukumar performed a physical checkup on the elephant yesterday morning. The elephant was carefully cared for after the forest crew paid tribute and gathered the bodily pieces for laboratory examination.
