In many cities including Delhi, retail shopkeepers are selling tomatoes for up to Rs 200 per kg. In such a situation, tomato has disappeared from the middle class vegetable. Due to this, the central government has made preparations to sell tomatoes at cheap prices by giving subsidy. Its responsibility has been given to NAFED and NCCF, who will start selling tomatoes at 30% cheaper than the market rate from today i.e. friday (July 14). This is the first time that the government itself is venturing into tomato sales.
According to Central Consumer Affairs Secretary Rohit Kumar Singh, there is an effort to make tomatoes available at 30% less than the market price. Cheap tomatoes will be sold in Delhi-NCR as well as in those states including Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Bihar, where the prices are skyrocketing. Stalls are being opened for the sale of tomatoes in all the big cities of these states like Patna, Kolkata, Varanasi, Lucknow, Kanpur. Efforts are being made to sell in all those cities where the market price is much higher than the national average price.
The central government has given the responsibility of selling cheap tomatoes to the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation (NAFED) and the National Cooperative Consumers Federation (NCCF). NCCF will sell cheap tomatoes in Delhi-NCR. This cheap tomato can be bought at NCCF's brand Mother Dairy's Safal outlet and Kendriya Bhandar outlet. Along with this, NCCF will also sell tomatoes for this through its outlets and mobile van shops. Along with NCCF, NAFED will also sell through their outlets in other states. Along with this, tie-ups have also been done with the shopkeepers at the local level.
According to Union Secretary Rohit Singh, the central government will continue the work of selling tomatoes at cheap prices until the prices of this vegetable come back to normal in the market. Usually in the first week of August, with the arrival of the new tomato crop, the prices come back to the normal level every year.
The government has given the responsibility of procuring tomatoes from the mandis of Andhra Pradesh, maharashtra and karnataka to NAFED and NCCF. Due to excess production of tomatoes in these states, the prices are very low in the mandis. After buying from here, this tomato will be sold at a discount rate in those places of high consumption, where the prices have reached much higher than the average of all-India rates in the last one month.
