According to Freedom House's 2021 "Freedom on the Net" report, out of 70 countries reviewed, china was the country with the most control over th

e internet. It scored only 10 out of 100 points, indicating the dire state of its internet freedom. Other highly restricted countries in terms of internet freedom include iran, Myanmar, and Cuba. Vietnam, which is fifth on the list, is following in the footsteps of its close ally China. China's 'Great Firewall' system tightly controls the internet, a mechanism that regulates internet traffic in and out of the country and gives the government the power to filter content. Countries like iran and north korea also adopt a similar system.

This model is now becoming popular in many countries of Southeast Asia as well. Countries like cambodia and thailand have recently been considering adopting such a strict internet policy. Strict rules on the internet are also common in countries in the Middle east and North Africa. The United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and bahrain are high on the list.

The report says that many measures are being adopted in russia such as banning online content, blocking platforms, propagating false information, cyber attacks and action against users. Apart from this, cyber laws there have also been made more stringent. This report clearly shows how some governments are using the Internet as a means of control and surveillance, which affects the freedom of expression of citizens.
