Neer Moru Recipe with Health Benefits

Neer Moru, a traditional South indian buttermilk, is a light, refreshing, and easily digestible drink that has been a staple in many households for centuries. Ingredients:

  • Fresh curd (yogurt) – 1 cup

  • Ginger – 1/2 teaspoon, finely grated
  • Green chili – 1 small, finely chopped (optional)
  • Curry leaves – 5–6
  • Coriander leaves – 1 tablespoon, finely chopped
  • Mustard seeds – 1/2 teaspoon
  • Asafoetida (hing) – a pinch
  • Coconut oil or ghee – 1 teaspoon for tempering
Method:

Prepare the buttermilk Base:
In a bowl, whisk 1 cup of fresh curd until smooth. Gradually add 2 cups of water and continue to whisk until you get a thin, watery consistency. This is the essence of “Neer Moru,” which is lighter than regular buttermilk. Add salt according to taste.

Add Flavorings:
Mix in the finely grated ginger, chopped green chili (optional), and coriander leaves. These ingredients not only enhance flavor but also contribute to digestion and immunity.

Tempering (Tadka):
Heat 1 teaspoon of coconut oil or ghee in a small pan. Add mustard seeds and let them splutter. Then add curry leaves and a pinch of asafoetida. Fry for a few seconds until aromatic. Pour this tempering into the prepared buttermilk. This step adds a traditional South indian flavor and increases the bioavailability of nutrients.

Chill and Serve:
Refrigerate the Neer Moru for 10–15 minutes before serving, or serve immediately with rice meals or as a refreshing drink. You can also garnish with a few extra coriander leaves for a fresh aroma.
