India has produced only two Formula One drivers so far:
Narain Karthikeyan and
Karun Chandhok. Since Chandhok’s stint in 2011-12, no indian has raced in the elite motorsport category. At
India Today’s South Conclave 2025, karthikeyan shared his views on how india can build its next F1 star.
1. Global Popularity Is Sparking InterestThe rise of shows like
Drive to Survive has made F1 more accessible and appealing to indian audiences. karthikeyan explained that this global exposure is inspiring a new generation of motorsport enthusiasts in india, bringing unprecedented interest to the sport.
2. High Costs Remain a Major BarrierOne of the biggest hurdles is affordability. Motorsport requires expensive equipment, much of which needs to be
imported. Added
duties and taxes make go-karting and other entry-level racing almost unaffordable for most families. According to Karthikeyan, lowering these costs could open doors for more young talent.
3. Need for corporate SupportKarthikeyan emphadata-sized the importance of
corporate sponsorships in nurturing young drivers. With proper funding, aspiring racers could access better training, equipment, and exposure, which are essential for reaching the professional level.
4. government Incentives Can HelpIncentives such as reduced import duties, grants, and infrastructure support could make a huge difference. karthikeyan highlighted that
government policies play a key role in building a sustainable motorsport ecosystem in India.
5. Lessons from the PastThe indian Grand Prix, held between 2011 and 2013, and the earlier presence of an indian F1 team, didn’t manage to cement motorsport in India. karthikeyan believes it was
“too early” for such initiatives, as awareness, infrastructure, and audience data-size were not yet sufficient.
6. Building a Motorsport EcosystemKarthikeyan pointed out that the current generation of parents has seen
F1 films and documentaries, and now they are encouraging their children to pursue motorsport. The combination of
federation efforts, corporate support, and growing interest is helping build a solid foundation for the sport.
7. Hope for the FutureWith rising awareness, improved infrastructure, and better financial support, karthikeyan is optimistic:
India is on its way to producing more F1-caliber drivers. The growing ecosystem could pave the way for talented young racers to shine on the global stage.
8. Final WordWhile challenges like cost and exposure remain, India’s motorsport scene is
gaining momentum. With continued support from federations, corporates, and parents, the country could see its next Formula One star emerge sooner than expected.
