EPFO Update 2026: Do You Have Multiple UAN Numbers?

Kokila Chokkanathan
Employees who have changed jobs multiple times may unknowingly hold more than one UAN (Universal Account Number). This can create confusion, affect EPF contributions, and complicate withdrawals or transfers.

Why Multiple UANs Occur:

  • Every new employer registers employees with EPFO, and sometimes a new UAN is generated if the previous one isn’t linked properly.
  • Employees may forget their old UAN or assume the new one replaces it, resulting in two or more active UANs.
Why You Should Fix It Immediately:

  • Multiple UANs fragment your EPF balance, making it difficult to track total contributions.
  • EPF withdrawals, transfers, and online services may be affected if your accounts aren’t consolidated.
  • Ensures accurate interest calculation and tax compliance on your accumulated EPF.
How to Merge Multiple UANs:

Identify all UANs associated with your mobile number or Aadhaar.

Log in to the EPFO portal and use the “UAN Helpdesk” or “EPF grievance portal”.

Submit a request to deactivate duplicate UANs and link all your PF accounts to a single UAN.

Confirm that all previous EPF contributions are transferred to your active UAN.

EPFO Advice:

The EPFO urges employees to check their UAN status regularly and ensure only one active UAN is linked to their Aadhaar and bank account. This simplifies PF management and makes withdrawals or transfers smoother.

With the digital tools available through EPFO, consolidating multiple UANs has become easier, avoiding unnecessary delays or confusion in managing your retirement savings.
